Total and Permanent Disability Discharge
A total and permanent disability (TPD) discharge can remove certain federal loans when a long-term condition prevents work. There are three documentation routes: Social Security, Veterans Affairs, or a physician's certification.
Eligibility requirements
- A Social Security disability determination, a 100% VA rating, or a licensed physician's certification
- Federal loans or TEACH Grant obligations in the borrower's name
- Responding to any follow-up requirements after discharge
