Begin with the official route, not a diagnosis list
Total and Permanent Disability discharge concerns certain federal student loans and TEACH Grant service obligations. The official process recognizes specific documentation routes. A diagnosis by itself does not explain which route applies, and you should not send medical records to a general website form.
Social Security documentation
Federal Student Aid describes qualifying Social Security Administration documentation and review-cycle criteria in its current instructions. Locate the complete SSA notice and verify that it contains the information required by the current application. Do not assume that receiving SSDI or SSI automatically supplies every required fact.
Veterans Affairs documentation
Some veterans may qualify using a VA determination. Review the official language for the required disability rating or unemployability determination and obtain the actual benefits or decision letter. Preserve the full document and date.
Medical-professional certification
The application also provides a certification route completed by an authorized medical professional. Use the current official form and instructions. Ask the professional whether they are authorized under the current rule and whether the records support each statement they are asked to certify. Student Loan Angel's public evaluation does not collect this medical evidence.
Prepare a minimal working file
Keep a copy of the application, the document used for the selected route, loan inventory, submission confirmation, and later correspondence. Share only what the official process or a retained professional actually requires. Do not provide an FSA ID, password, bank details, or payment card to someone offering to apply for you.
After submission
Follow the status and any requests through the official channel. Read the current instructions about payments, new federal borrowing, and post-discharge obligations. Save the final determination rather than relying on a telephone summary.
