Pause before using the contact information in the message
An official-looking seal, caller ID, or company name does not prove who contacted you. Federal Student Aid and the Federal Trade Commission warn about promises of immediate forgiveness, pressure to act, requests for account credentials, and upfront debt-relief fees.
Verify independently
- Do not click the message link or call the number it supplies.
- Open StudentAid.gov yourself and review the servicer listed in your account.
- Compare the sender with Federal Student Aid's current list of official servicers and communication addresses.
- Ask for the caller's organization, purpose, callback number, and a written explanation. Do not provide an FSA ID, password, one-time code, Social Security number, or payment information merely to verify the call.
- If the contact claims to be Student Loan Angel, compare it with the verified contact section on our website. Our public evaluation never asks for your FSA ID, password, Social Security number, or payment card.
Understand free federal actions and paid professional work
Applying for federal repayment, consolidation, forgiveness, and discharge programs through StudentAid.gov or an official servicer is free. A law firm may charge for distinct legal services only under an explained agreement; payment does not buy special access, guaranteed eligibility, or a government result.
If you shared credentials or paid
Change the affected password through the official site, review account contact information and recent activity, contact the official servicer, and notify the bank or card issuer when appropriate. Preserve the message, phone number, receipt, contract, and account changes. Report suspected fraud through the FTC's official reporting site and use the complaint paths identified by Federal Student Aid.
How Student Loan Angel communicates
