Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Programs
Forgiveness and discharge depend on the loan, repayment plan, employment, payment history, and the law in effect when relief is granted.
Current federal programs
PSLF can discharge eligible nondefaulted Direct Loans after 120 qualifying months of public-service employment. Teacher Loan Forgiveness provides up to $5,000 or $17,500 after five consecutive, complete academic years that meet its requirements. Eligible legacy IBR, PAYE, and ICR borrowers may receive discharge after the applicable 20- or 25-year term.
SAVE ended effective March 10, 2026. RAP became available July 1, 2026 and can discharge a remaining balance after 360 on-time monthly payments. Each program has separate eligibility and counting rules.
Tax and verification
IDR balances forgiven in 2026 or later are generally federal cancellation-of-debt income. PSLF, Teacher Loan Forgiveness, death discharge, and total and permanent disability discharge have identified federal exceptions. State law and individual exclusions may differ.
Verify loan types, credited months, employment, and current plan eligibility through StudentAid.gov and the applicable official form before relying on a projected discharge.
