Social Security Disability and Student Loan Discharge: Current TPD Routes
SSA documentation may support TPD discharge through five current routes. Learn the qualifying criteria, data-matching process, direct application option, and limited three-year condition.
Receiving SSDI, SSI, or qualifying Social Security retirement benefits does not by itself establish eligibility for total and permanent disability discharge. The borrower's Social Security Administration documentation must show one of the federal qualifying routes.
Five SSA qualification routes
SSA documentation may qualify when it shows a next continuing disability review scheduled within five to seven years; a three-year continuing disability review; a disability onset date or disability-benefit history at least five years before the TPD application; a compassionate allowance; or current SSA retirement benefits when, immediately before qualifying for retirement benefits, the borrower met one of the preceding four routes.
Data matching and direct applications
The Department of Education compares qualifying SSA data with federal student-aid records. An identified borrower receives notice and an opportunity to opt out before discharge. A borrower who does not receive a match notice may apply directly with SSA documentation that establishes a qualifying route. Official materials do not promise a fixed matching or processing time.
The three-year condition
An SSA-based discharge has a three-year post-discharge period. The Department checks whether the borrower receives a new Direct Loan or TEACH Grant during that period. It does not monitor earnings, employment, medical improvement, benefit status, or later continuing-disability-review results.
Frequently asked questions
Does a three-year SSA continuing disability review qualify for TPD discharge?
Yes. A three-year continuing disability review is one current SSA route. It is not necessary to have only a five-to-seven-year review interval.
Does the Department monitor income after an SSA-based TPD discharge?
No. During the three-year period, the relevant condition is receipt of a new Direct Loan or TEACH Grant, not earnings, employment, medical status, or SSA benefit status.
